Sure if you know your market will have top end graphics cards with updated drivers go for it, but I don't know what that market is unless you're aiming for an AAA title.Originally posted by LionLord:The integrated card is not recognised because i have a difrent card, an Nvidia one, thats what other websites tell, that is normal to not find the integrated card when other is in use. While I agree moving to shaders/away from the cruft of the fixed function pipeline is the way to go, really we need to give it a couple of years (OpenGL 2 is 5 or so years old and there's still issues with implementation on platforms specifically windows, where as OpenGL 3.1 came out last year)before OpenGL 3 has penetrated the public market enough for it not to be an issue. Really OpenGL 3 has only just become USABLE for developers let alone the public. It doesn't matter if your market doesn't support. I understand not pushing for OGL 4.x but not OGL 3.x OGL 3.x is backwards compatible with OGL 2.x. If I was creating a game I'd be using the one where I get better functionality out of instead of wasting my time on something where I have more work to do, then later worry about the updating process.

So why even bother with using Fixed format let alone OGL 2.1 imho. You going to have to use shaders sooner or later. Why you think DirectX and OpenGL moved away from it.

Fixed format is outdated, useless and performance shot. Quote: I can't even get decent performance without having to updating my video drivers. They'll know not to buy your game, or try to buy it and end up frustrated when it doesn't run on their computer. Well you might be right, but if you put up specifications then the user will know. I can't even get decent performance without having to updating my video drivers.

Of course if you're just making tech demos or portfolio pieces knock yourself out as long as you can guarantee the person looking at your site can run your work to appreciate it. Unless you're aiming for a top end product, which unless you are a decent sized company with 50+ staff working on that project, you will not take advantage of DX10 or you will not be able to compete with the big boys. The drivers have only given me OpenGL 3.0 support from which as far as I can tell from people who would like to use OpenGL 3 is near useless, as really to work the the new stripped back API you want OpenGL 3.1/3.2 +

I just recently updated my computer to Windows 7 and it installed graphics drivers for me, and while I intend to update them, I suspect many users would not. While most cards can get it with new drivers don't bet on any significant amount of people being upto date with their graphics card drivers.Īn example might be Torchlight which is quite a pretty looking game which uses the fixed function pipeline entirely. IMHOĪpart from DX10/DX11 being the new shiny tech, there's no reason to use them for non-AAA games, same goes for OpenGL 3.X. That's like people who still use DirectX 9 just because XP is still around.
